Lynn Doe Shipway '66 and husband John "Dugan" Shipway

In the true spirit of the Bell Tower Society's charter declaration, Lynn Doe Shipway '66 and her husband John "Dugan" Shipway, "grateful for the special influence Kent School has had in our lives or in the lives of those dear to us and desiring both to perpetuate and enhance that influence for future members of the Kent family" thoughtfully chose "to be among those investing in the School's mission through a planned estate gift."

Lynn and Dugan have jointly provided in their wills for a bequest that will one day fund The John F. and Lynn Doe Shipway Scholarships. Once established, income from this endowed fund will – annually and in perpetuity – provide "one or more scholarships" so that capable and needy boys and girls can pursue the opportunity of a Kent education.

The Shipways' marvelous planned gift speaks directly to one of the two priorities of the Campaign for the Permanent Kent, namely: to increase endowment in support of scholarship aid. Only through endowment restricted for this purpose will Kent School be able to preserve and continue to honor Fr. Sill's foundiong inten, first promoted through his slideing-scale tuition plan, to bring a quality, church-centered education to "families of modest means." This intention has evolved into a long-standing tradition of which we remain very proud and which Lynn and Dugan's thoughtful decision seeks to enhance.

The fact that Lynn and Dugan have both been educators – Lynn at George Washington University and Skidmore College, and Dugan throughout his career in the Navy – underscores their sensitivity to the need of providing those who possess great promise the opportunity to realize their potential. That Dugan would join Lynn as a couple in honoring Kent lends special meaning to their intention. With this gift, Lynn and Dugan join over 460 Bell Tower Society members who have "determined to reach beyond the limits of their own lives to enhance opportunities of future generations of Kent School youth."
